General Questions

All too often, roof system problems are discovered after leaking or other serious damage occurs. Periodic (twice-a-year) inspections often uncover cracked, warped, or missing shingles, damaged tile underlayment, loose seams and deteriorated flashings, excessive surface granules accumulating in the gutters or downspouts, and other visible signs of roof system problems. Indoors, look for cracked paint, discolored drywall, and peeling wallpaper as signs of damage to roof areas.
Not necessarily. Leaking can result from damage done to a section of the roof, deteriorated tile underlayment, or from flashing coming loose. A roofing system failure, however, is generally irreversible and is a result from general wear and tear due to age of roof, improper roof installation, choice of materials, deteriorated tile underlayment, wind damage, or from the installation of a roof system inappropriate to the building.
The following are things that may indicate that your roof needs replacing:
  • Missing, cracked, or curling shingles
  • Blistering or peeling paint
  • Shingle, sheathing, or siding decay
  • Leakage in the attic after heavy rains
  • Stains on interior walls or ceilings
  • High energy bills

You should remove all loose items from your walls and shelves. The constant hammering may cause enough vibration to shake these items down. Make sure you have your driveway clear as well as the areas surrounding your home. We also recommend that no vehicles be parked in the garage during the roofing process. This is recommended to avoid the chance of material falling off the roof into the driveway, garage, or the area directly around your home.
We watch the weather very closely. We would never tear off your roof with a chance of rain in the forecast. We take the proper precautions to ensure when we leave at night, your roof is completely water tight. During your reroofing process, we will tarp your roof as needed at night or ensure the proper new waterproof roof underlayment is installed prior to any rainfall that may occur.

No. As far as heat transfer inside the home, the color of the roof makes no difference. So choose the color you want without worrying about higher energy costs!
Most roofing work should not be done yourself. Manufacturers generally will not give a warranty if you do not have a professional roofer install the product. Professionals are trained to handle the environment on the roof and can handle the conditions that may present themselves when doing a roofing job. The dangers to a homeowner with trying to do your own roof work could be a lot more expensive than just hiring a roofing professional to come out and do the work.
The price of a new roof depends on the type of material you select, whether you are removing the old roof or not, the type of underlayment, the price of the permit, labor costs, and so on. We recommend and encourage you to get at least three (3) estimates. However, be sure that if one person comes in higher than the other that you ask the right questions about the type of material being used and the reputation of the company. Just because one estimate is cheaper than another, does not mean that it is better. Sometimes the higher priced contractor is the one you want to go with because of their reputation, maintaining proper insurance and licensing, for being a well known contractor, and because of the quality of the material they are using.

Additional Helpful Information

It is always recommended that you use a professional, but in case of an emergency, it is possible for you to replace the shingle or broken tile yourself. (Always practice proper safety procedures and never walk on a wet roof.)

Composition shingle replacement:
For composition shingles, roofing cement can be used to repair torn or curled shingles. Stabilize repaired shingles with nails or a heavy board until the cement has dried. To replace a composition, carefully lift the shingle above the missing shingle, then trim and place the new shingle underneath so that it doesn't catch on any edges (it may be necessary to remove excess staples or nails). Carefully nail the new shingle into place.

Wood shingles or shakes replacement:
For wood shingles, repairs are best done with an aluminum piece that can be slid under the shingle. This should protect the exposed area, while not being visible from below.

To replace a wood shingle requires a special tool, a shingle ripper, to slip under the shingle and hook and cut the nail. The nail can also be cut with a hacksaw, but is difficult to do. Slip the new shingle into position, but leave it ¼ inch longer than the other shingles. Then nail it into place right below the end of the overlapping shingle above. Finally, with a block of wood against the shingle butt, drive it up the last ¼ inch to bend the nails under the shingle above.

Tile replacement:
To replace a tile, remove all of the broken pieces, then gently lift the tiles and slide the new tile into place. Use roof cement to 'glue' the tile to each adjacent tile.
Rain gutter systems are an important element in maintaining a healthy home and are a beneficial extension of your roofing system as well.

Gutters should be cleaned at least once in the summer and twice in the fall.

  • Most obviously, rain gutters will funnel water off and away from your house. This will prevent water from entering your home through the roof, windows, and doors, as well as prevent your fascia boards from rotting.
  • They'll also help keep the exterior of your walls clean by reducing the amount of dirt that's splashed against them.
  • Besides those direct benefits, rain gutters provide a few, more indirect assets as well. For example, rain gutters protect your home's foundation by reducing the amount of water entering the soil that surrounds it. This limits the soil's ability to expand and contract, thus providing a more steadfast base for your home.
  • They prevent topsoil erosion, too, which also helps secure your home's foundation.
  • Finally, besides your home's exterior and foundation, rain gutters are also good for your plants. They stop heavy runoff that could be very harmful to plants in its path.
  • And if you collect the rain water in a barrel, you can water your plants for free, saving you money and reducing your carbon footprint.
